How much money does it cost us to keep all the American embassies around the world operational?
I want to know where the money comes from? the amount? and does the amount include expenses for marines stationed there, the diplomat homes, transportation, and salaries and the original start up amount, like the amount of constructing a building as technically advanced as an embassy ex. bomb “proof” building, safe rooms, electronic interference proof rooms, ect? Also what happens to an embassy when they shut it down? Do we loose that territory? Do marines stay in it?
Just to answer your main question of the cost to keep all American Embassies around the world operational.
2010 Budget for the State Department is $48.6 Billion. Embassies are under the state department. $283 million to facilitate the hiring of over 740 new Foreign Service personnel. This is part of a broader effort to expand the Foreign Service by 25 percent. With regard to the Security personnel, I think it is charged to the Armed Forces budget as it is their personnel. Other technical gadgets like communication equipment may be owned by the military and other agencies. With regard to capital assets like buildings, land, and others, there may be x-deals with the host country or tie up with foreign aid projects. Not all are cash based procurements. Some are on long term leases.
