Staying safe whilst moving house, the tips you need to know
Whilst moving house is thought to be an easy and safe routine, it does not always go to plan. Although you may have hired a van, or assigned people to help you move, a few precautions should still be made.
Lifting heavy objects is not always thought about thoroughly when moving house and often movers will assume that everything will be fine. For example, lifting heavy objects in and out of the van needs to be carefully examined beforehand. It is important to test the weight of the object before lifting it and if you think it may be too heavy, be sure to ask for assistant immediately before attempting it on your own.
When lifting these heavy objects it’s important to keep your back straight when squatting towards the ground and to not twist or turn your body whilst straightening your knees carefully. Also ensure your footing is firm and if not perhaps have someone assist you or even make sure your posture is correct before you have a go lifting the item.
Furthermore, keep the box close to your body at all times and take short steps (there is no rush) and always remember to keep your feet shoulder feet apart for extra balance and safety as you walk. Don’t forget that if you feel tired you can rest, it is no competition or time counting task. If there is only two of you why not take it in turns to lift heavy objects? or team task all the way up the path?
Gloves may also be a good idea, as a lot of items contain glass, wood or even broken plastic can cause injury. If you feel you cannot put the box down but it is getting heavy the worst thing you want to happen is for the object to slowly cut or dig into your hands until you find the nearest safety spot to put it down.
Ensure that all children are left at home (the old home) with someone to look after them or at a grandparents or aunties. Moving house is no fun for a child when there is no one to look after them properly, no toys as they’re all packed away and people constantly telling you to be careful or move out the way. It’s just not safe.
Make sure the pathway is clear from old house to van and van to new house. Make sure you wedge all doors open where possible (this includes the van door) and remove any objects that may even find their own way onto the path just in time to trip you up and cause an injury.
