How do I set up remote desktop connections to a computer on a local network?
Ok, I have a network at my house off a Linksys router, so my compute ris 192.168.1.2. Now, I want to acess this from anywhere. I have the computer itself enabled for remote desktop and have a strong password. I also have a strong password on my router. So, if I type in the Ip address the router recieves from my ISP for a remote session from someone elses house, how does it know what computer on that IP address to use? Since all computers in my house are on the same router, they all have the same external IP address. I am thinking this is done with ports, is that correct? Like maybe soemthing like 72.33.23.22:8774 to access one computer and 72.33.23.22:8875 for another??
Thanks!!!!
You are correct! Routers use NAT (Network Address Translation) to allow multiple computers on a private subnet use one public IP addresss. The router knows which computer to send remote data to through PAT (Port Address Translation).
A good example is web traffic (Port 80). If you and another computer are both accessing the same web page, you’re both going to need to use port 80 to reach the web server. So the router performs PAT. It looks like this:
Computer 1 —> Port 6000 —> Router —–> Port 80 —-> Web Server
Computer 2 —> Port 6001 —> Router —–> Port 80 —-> Web Server
And to get back it looks like this:
Web server —–> Port 80 —–> Router —–> Port 6000 —-> Comp 1
Web server —–> Port 80 —–> Router —–> Port 6001 —-> Comp 2
There’s a bit more underlying technical details dealing with the Transport Layer that would be too lengthy to explain here, but that’s a crash course on NAT and PAT.
On your router, you’re going to have to configure a port foward with the proper port and your computer’s IP address so the router knows which host to send the Remote Desktop packets to. (I think it’s port 3824 or somewhere along that.)
